چکیده

We thank Brian Hearne from McArthur River Mining (MRM) for providing a response to our paper. We were careful in our paper not to draw any direct link between mining activities and Vibrio infections, and to avoid naming the Mine. The potential relevance of water heavy metal concentration to Vibrio infection was not the focus of our paper, illustrated by the fact that it is not mentioned in the Abstract. We stated in the Discussion that ‘A link between Vibrio infections and local environmental perturbation is speculative only, but it would appear that altered heavy metal water content in the area could have the potential to affect Vibrio population density...’. We are aware that, as noted in the MRM letter, the local Environmental Protection Agency has acknowledged that the only scientific evidence to date of impact from the mine in the estuarine reaches of the river or in the Gulf is in the immediate vicinity of the loading facility.

Necrotising fasciitis caused by Vibrio vulnificus

Necrotising fasciitis is a rapidly progressing necrotising process involving subcutaneous tissue and fascia but sparing muscles, and is accompanied by severe systemic toxicity.1 2The syndrome is often caused by group A streptococci,' 3 but it is now recognised that other bacteria may be involved, usually in mixed culture. Organisms that have been implicated include a variety of anaerobes, enter...

[Necrotising fasciitis caused by Vibrio vulnificus].

A case of necrotising fasciitis caused by Vibrio vulnificus is described. The need for early recognition and aggressive surgical treatment are highlighted, and the necrotising infections due to V vulnificus described in the published work are reviewed.

Recreational swimmers' exposure to Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA.

Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are ubiquitous in the marine-estuarine environment, but the magnitude of human non-ingestion exposure to these waterborne pathogens is largely unknown. We evaluated the magnitude of dermal exposure to V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus among swimmers recreating in Vibrio-populated waters by conducting swim studies at four swimming locations in th...

Antimicrobial Susceptibility of Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus Recovered from Recreational and Commercial Areas of Chesapeake Bay and Maryland Coastal Bays

Vibrio vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus in the estuarine-marine environment are of human health significance and may be increasing in pathogenicity and abundance. Vibrio illness originating from dermal contact with Vibrio laden waters or through ingestion of seafood originating from such waters can cause deleterious health effects, particularly if the strains involved are resistant to clinica...
